gCTS SAP
gCTS (Git-enabled Change and Transport System) is a feature introduced by SAP in S/4HANA 1909 to modernize the change and transport management of ABAP development objects. It leverages Git as an external version control system (VCS) to store ABAP code, providing enhanced collaboration and branching/merging capabilities.
Key benefits of gCTS:
- Enhanced Version Control: Git’s distributed nature enables better tracking of changes, improved collaboration, and easier conflict resolution compared to traditional SAP transports.
- Parallel Development: Supports parallel development in the same system through feature branches, enhancing agility and reducing development cycle times.
- Integration with DevOps Toolchains: Enables integration with popular DevOps tools and CI/CD pipelines, fostering automation and continuous delivery practices.
How gCTS works:
- Registration: A remote Git repository is registered with the ABAP system.
- Cloning: The remote repository is cloned locally on the ABAP system’s file system.
- Development: Developers work on their code changes in the ABAP system.
- Commit and Push: Changes are committed to the local Git repository and pushed to the remote repository.
- Transport: When a transport request is released, gCTS automatically pulls the changes from the remote repository and includes them in the transport.
